Discover the Best Surf Breaks in Ahangama, Sri Lanka

Discover the Best Surf Breaks in Ahangama, Sri Lanka

Ahangama, a charming coastal town in Sri Lanka, has become a haven for surfers like me from around the globe. Where else in the world can you drive to 10 different surf breaks on a scooter, check if they’re crowded or working, and then choose the perfect spot? It’s just too easy.

But it’s not only the surf breaks; it’s also the vibe. The whole Ahangama and Midigama area attracts this laid-back, surfer kind of vibe. From Surfing Wombats to Lamana, the area is filled with places where you’ll hear, “Bro, waves are pumping.” So, where should you surf?

Here are my favourite spots in the Ahangama area, divided into categories for beginners, intermediates, advanced, and super advanced surfers.

Ahangama Surf Map

Beginner Spots (You’re Just Learning to Catch Your First Green Wave)

Guest surfing on the waves at Weligama Beach.

Weligama Beach

Weligama Beach is famous for its long, sandy bay with gentle, rolling waves. It’s a hotspot for surf schools and beginners, offering plenty of space to learn without the reef. Also a lot of main rippers (really good surfers) come from Weligama beach, so not only the beginner spot ;).  It works all year round. There are many surf schools like Freedom Surf SchoolLucky Surf School, and Soul Temple.

Pro tip: The rooftop view from Hangtime Hostel is epic.

Alicja surfing on a longboard at Kabalana Beach.

Kabalana Beach

Kabalana’s sandy bottom and consistent, mellow waves make it an ideal spot to practice and improve your surfing skills. There are fewer people than in Weligama, and the water is usually a little cleaner.

However, be aware that it doesn’t work all year round, and during the green season (May to October), it can be rough. Also, when the surf forecast says big waves, head to Weligama for easier whitewash. Plenty of surf schools are also on the beach. Pro tip: I like to chill at Timeless Villa, have something to drink, and dip in the pool.

Intermediate Spots (You Know How to Turn and Understand Surf Etiquette)

Carmela surfing at Gas Station Surf Point.

Gas Station in front of Soul and Surf

This spot offers consistent waves and a friendly lineup, perfect for intermediates looking to refine their skills. The waves here are fun and forgiving, making it a great place to practice turns and maneuvers. It is also only a 5-minute walk from Nets Cowork.

There are three different peaks. Good for longboarding as well. You can go in front of Kaffi (after a delicious coffee) and finish sunset with a beer at Soul and Surf. Dreamy actually. There isn’t a surfboard rental on the beach, but you can probably rent from Soul and Surf. Check out also the webcam.

Marel preparing to longboard in Sion with Devil's Rock in the background.

Sion, Devil’s Rock

Sion provides longer rides and slightly more powerful waves. It used to be one of my favourite spots, but now it gets a little overcrowded by surf camps. However, when it’s working, it’s so fun! It’s next to Devil’s Rock, and the scenery is beautiful. Interesting fact: Once I surfed there with a crocodile. There isn’t a surfboard rental.

Surfing Wombats group relaxing on Lazy Right beach after a surf session.

Lazy Right

True to its name, Lazy Right offers easy, long rides perfect for those looking to enjoy a relaxed surf session. The right-hand waves here are smooth and consistent. It’s on my favorite beach, Midigama.

Pro tip: Get yourself a pizza at Surfing Wombats after your session—this is the real dream. Also, when the swell gets big and scary and you are more advanced, this is one of the few places that holds and gets WOOO big. There is a surfboard rental.

Guest surfing the waves at Marshmallow Point.

Marshmallow

Marshmallow is known for its playful waves that are great for practicing new moves. It’s a favorite among surf schools in Ahangama. I like it when it’s bigger, as otherwise, it tends to have long waits. Go for a social surf. There isn’t a surfboard rental a the moment.

Carmela surfing at Stick Surf Point.

Sticks

A fun reef break that offers both lefts and rights. Sticks can get a bit punchy, making it exciting for intermediate surfers. There is a very nice surf school RDS in front where you can chill and also rent boards. Ask them for some lessons as well.

View of Animals Surfing Point from Cactus Ahangama.

Animals

Another intermediate-friendly spot, Animals provides fun, consistent waves with a less crowded lineup. It’s a great place to practice and gain confidence. Pro tip: Chill at Cactus after your morning surf and have a cup of coffee. You can rent a board on the beach or from some stops and restaurants like Ceylon Sliders.

Advanced Spots (You’re So Advanced You Slowly Understand You Don’t Know How to Surf – I’m Talking About Myself)

Kabalana (The Rock)

This spot is famous for its powerful right-hand waves that break over a reef. It’s perfect for advanced surfers looking for thrilling rides, and I love it. It’s also great if your boyfriend is just learning and you’re ripping hard, as he can stay and surf the beach break while you rip the reef break. However, it can get really crowded, and the atmosphere can become quite tense. I recommend a mid-day windy surf during peak season.

Carmela surfing at The Rock in Kabalana.

Lazy Left

Lazy Left offers long, powerful left-hand waves that are perfect for advanced surfers. It is probably the wave that I have surfed the most because I like to hang out at Surfing Wombats.

It usually has a steep takeoff and then gets really mellow, making it more suitable for longboards. But I’m a short-boarder and love it. I’ve also seen a local shredder, Shaggy, getting barrelled there.

I love Lazy Left. But people always recommend it to beginners—it’s really not a beginner spot. It has a fast takeoff, and you have to sit in the right place. During peak season, it becomes a complete zoo with boards flying, people crying, and everyone dropping in. Still, I go. But I prefer the windy afternoon session. There is a surfboard rental across the beach.

Dreamsea Left

In front of the hotel Dreamsea, this challenging left-hand reef break offers fast, hollow waves. You can touch the reef. It’s a very inconsistent wave, sometimes working, sometimes not. But it usually doesn’t get too crowded.

Pro tip: Have something to eat at Dreamsea and dip in the pool.

Plantation

Known for its powerful, long left-handers, it’s super fun with lefts and rights. It can get a little crowded during peak season. You can rent a surfboard from Cheeky Monkey, which is really close, or from Cocosurf Plant Inn.

Coconuts

Coconuts provides fast, powerful waves that are great for advanced surfers looking for a challenge. The waves here can get quite large and hollow. And what we love the most is Coconut Beach! You must go there for sunset. No surfboard rental on the beach.

Sunset view near Coconut Surfing Point, with vibrant colors reflecting over the horizon and tranquil waters.

Super Advanced (You Actually Get Barrelled, and You’re So Good That You Always Follow Etiquette and Are Generally a Really Nice Person in the Water)

Rams

Rams is known for its heavy, barreling waves that break over a shallow reef. It’s a spot for only the most experienced surfers who are comfortable in challenging conditions. But I mean, I go here sometimes. It’s a mostly right-hander, but when it’s busy, the left is super fun as well. Just make sure you follow all the rules.

Secret Spot

A hidden gem that offers powerful, fast waves. Some say it’s the Sri Lankan Pipeline. People have gotten smashed and had to go to the hospital. It doesn’t work all the time, but when it’s on, it’s on.

But where it is, I do not know. Because I also heard there are a few of them. But if I did know, I couldn’t say…you know, because there is this Secret Secret Spot surf code and nobody can know. (Unless you need to have your Instagram reel made and need someone to film it. Otherwise, nobody can know…)

Leave a comment if I left something important out :) or you have more questions. See you in the water!

Information about General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

We may be collecting and using information from you if you are from the European Economic Area (EEA), and in this section of our Privacy Policy we are going to explain exactly how and why is this data collected, and how we maintain this data under protection from being replicated or used in the wrong way.

What is GDPR?

GDPR is an EU-wide privacy and data protection law that regulates how EU residents’ data is protected by companies and enhances the control the EU residents have, over their personal data. The GDPR is relevant to any globally operating company and not just the EU-based businesses and EU residents. Our customers’ data is important irrespective of where they are located, which is why we have implemented GDPR controls as our baseline standard for all our operations worldwide.

What is personal data?

Any data that relates to an identifiable or identified individual. GDPR covers a broad spectrum of information that could be used on its own, or in combination with other pieces of information, to identify a person. Personal data extends beyond a person’s name or email address. Some examples include financial information, political opinions, genetic data, biometric data, IP addresses, physical address, sexual orientation, and ethnicity. The Data Protection Principles include requirements such as:
  • Personal data collected must be processed in a fair, legal, and transparent way and should only be used in a way that a person would reasonably expect.
  • Personal data should only be collected to fulfil a specific purpose and it should only be used for that purpose. Organizations must specify why they need the personal data when they collect it.
  • Personal data should be held no longer than necessary to fulfil its purpose.
  • People covered by the GDPR have the right to access their own personal data. They can also request a copy of their data, and that their data be updated, deleted, restricted, or moved to another organization.

Why is GDPR important?

GDPR adds some new requirements regarding how companies should protect individuals’ personal data that they collect and process. It also raises the stakes for compliance by increasing enforcement and imposing greater fines for breach. Beyond these facts it’s simply the right thing to do. At NETS Cowork & Colive we strongly believe that your data privacy is very important and we already have solid security and privacy practices in place that go beyond the requirements of this new regulation.

Individual Data Subject’s Rights – Data Access, Portability and Deletion

We are committed to helping our customers meet the data subject rights requirements of GDPR. NETS Cowork & Colive processes or stores all personal data in fully vetted, DPA compliant vendors. We do store all conversation and personal data for up to 6 years unless your account is deleted. In which case, we dispose of all data in accordance with our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, but we will not hold it longer than 60 days. We are aware that if you are working with EU customers, you need to be able to provide them with the ability to access, update, retrieve and remove personal data. We got you! We’ve been set up as self service from the start and have always given you access to your data and your customers data. Our customer support team is here for you to answer any questions you might have about working with the API.

California Residents

The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) requires us to disclose categories of Personal Information we collect and how we use it, the categories of sources from whom we collect Personal Information, and the third parties with whom we share it, which we have explained above. We are also required to communicate information about rights California residents have under California law. You may exercise the following rights:
  • Right to Know and Access.
